Research interests

1.Laser Surface Texturing.

Laser surface texturing (LST) is a “surface engineering” process that allows coverage of surfaces by regular arrays of ablated micro-dimples or stripes, the presence of which has been demonstrated to provide benefits on the tribological behavior of lubricated contacts in terms of reduction of friction and damping of wear, thanks to oil-holding and debris-trapping capabilities, and to the enhancement of hydrodynamic pressure. Nowadays, laser surface texturing (LST) is t a widely employed micromachining technology, proposed for a large number of applications, including reduction of stiction in magnetic recording, increase of adhesion and mechanical interlocking, control of wettability, promotion of tissue in-growth in biomedical prostheses, improvement of esthetic appearance, control of drag forces in aero/hydro-dynamic application, and control of friction.

2.Lubrication and Sealing Theory of Gas-Solid Two Phase Fluid.

Nanoparticles-laden gas film (NLGF) was formed by adding SiO2nanoparticles with certain volume fraction into the air gas film in a thrust bearing. An effective viscosity of the gas-solid two phase lubrication media was introduced. The pressure distribution in NLGF and the load capacity of the thrust bearing were investigated both by experimental and numerical methods. The results showed that the NLGF can increase the load capacity when the film thickness is larger than 30 lm. The mechanism of the enhancement effect of load capacity was attributed to the increase of the effective viscosity of the NLGF from the pure air film, and the novel lubrication media of the NLGF can be expected for the bearing industry application.
